Gambo Muhammad Ilyasu was born in Lafia on 10 April 1961.  He hails from Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. He is an indigene of Nasarawa State.

       Gambo M Ilyasu attended Nasarawa LGA Primary School from 1969 to 1976. He had his secondary education in Government College, Pankshin (in the then Plateau State) from 1976 to 1981.  He attended Bayero University Kano from 1981 to 1985 where he obtained Bsc Hons Accounting Degree (with Second Class Upper Division).  In 1998, he obtained MBA (Finance) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan in 2011. In 1984, Gambo Ilyasu enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 1 June 1984. He enjoyed steady promotion up to the Rank of Air Commodore until his retirement on 10 April 2015 after 31 years of meritorious and unblemished service to the Nigerian Air Force in particular and Nigeria in general.

       Air Commodore Gambo M Ilyasu (rtd) attended the then Command and Staff College (CSC) now renamed Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji for his Junior Division Course. He was also a member of CSC Course 23 in the same institution where he was awarded Passed Staff College (psc). Gambo M Ilyasu was a member of National Defence College Course 18 where he was awarded Fellow of Defence College (fdc). The Retired Senior Officer has also attended various workshops and seminars both in Nigeria and overseas. Few amongst these workshop and seminar are Electronic Bills Payment and Utility Revenue Management Workshop in Beijing, China in 2007 and International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) Seminar in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2014.

Gambo M Ilyasu has served in various Units both in Nigeria and overseas during his service years.  Some of the appointments included Deputy Defence Attaché Finance, Nigerian Embassy, Moscow, in the defunct Union of the Soviet Socialists Republics (now in present Russia). Gambo M Ilyasu was a Directing Staff at Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji where he was awarded psc Dagger {psc(+)}. He was the Director, Nigerian Air Force Pension at the Military Pensions Board Abuja. He was later appointed as Director of Finance, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna. He later became the Director of Budget at the Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force, Abuja, which was his last appointment before retirement. Gambo M Ilyasu is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute Management (FNIM) and a member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria. He is therefore a Certified National Accountant (CNA).

Gambo M Ilyasu is married to 2 wives, former Rakiya Aliyu Muhammad and Rahmat Muhammad Ibrahim and the marriages are blessed with 5 children; 2 girls and 3 boys.  The retired senior officer is well traveled in the cause of his military career. He has visited United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Belgium, China, Brazil, Cuba, India, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Senegal, the Gambia and Cameroon among other countries. His hobbies include traveling, playing Golf, meeting people, current affairs and adventure generally.

His awards and honours are Distinguished Service Star (DSS), Passed Staff College Dagger {psc(+)}, Fellow of Defence College (fdc), Fellow of Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM), Certified National Accountant (CNA), Bsc Accounting (BUK), Masters of Business Administration (ABU) and Masters in Strategic Studies (UI) among others.
